The Difference Between Drifting And Designing
Most people do not design their future. They drift into it. They make decisions based on what is immediately in front of them and what needs to be handled today. What seems like the next logical step, before they know it, five years have passed and they look around and wonder how they ended up here.
This is how most leaders operate. They are very good at managing the present. Handling what is in front of them. Responding to what is urgent. But they are not designing the future, they are just letting it happen.
Leaders who build something significant are the ones who design intentionally. They do not just ask “what should I do next?” They ask “what do I want to exist in five years? What do I want to have built? Who do I want to have become? What legacy do I want to leave?”
Then they work backwards. If I want that in five years, what needs to happen in the next twelve months? What decisions do I need to make now that will create the conditions for that future? What do I need to start building today?
This is design. This is intentional direction. This is the moment to design your next chapter deliberately.
Not just continuing to do what you have been doing. Not just optimising what already exists. But imagining the next version of your business. The next version of your leadership. The next version of your impact. Then making the decisions today that create the conditions for that future.
What would your ideal version of your business look like in three years? Not what is realistic. What is ideal. What is aligned with who you are actually becoming. What feeds you instead of drains you. What has impact instead of just revenue. What you really want to spend your time on instead of what you feel obligated to do.
Once you have that vision, the work becomes clear. What would need to change to make that reality? What would you need to stop doing? What would you need to start doing? Who would you need to bring in? What would you need to learn?
Design it. Do not let it happen to you.
